It is not a gas cap (most of those are painted red on aircraft)good guess...

Dang - my first gut reaction was a sight cover. I've seen one of these, a long time ago ... cannot for the life of me remember whether it was a sight or barrel cover ...For a moment, it was striking me as something we used to cover the sensitive lens for a Nav/Radar system ... but, that's not right ... I had limited AC-130 contact (more on the MC/RC/EC-130s from the 7th SOS ...DUDE, YOU GOT ME BIG TIME!!! :)
You are very close...They do not use gun covers... but they have something very close to your other answer...look at a picture of an AC-130A or AC-130H after 1970... :) you are almost thereIts anyones game now :)
Sight cover in that it is a cover for the targeting system (sight, like bore sight) ... that was what I meant ...

AN/ASQ-145 (V) LOW LEVEL LIGHT TELEVISION If I had a good picture, I could show you exactly what lense it came off of. That lense is no longer used and has since been upgraded.
